From COP15 to COP31: We Still Need a Systemic Green Transformation

An Open Letter to the COP31 Delegates and Global Civil Society

In the face of the intensifying climate crisis, extreme weather disasters, biodiversity collapse, and endless resource exploitation, we must directly confront the root cause: a capitalist system driven by infinite economic growth and profit cannot solve the crisis it created. As Albert Einstein famously stated, "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."

Over the past decades, market-driven mechanisms such as carbon trading, carbon offsets, and purely technological solutions have proven insufficient to halt global warming. What we need is not greenwashing or incremental tweaks, but a Systemic Transformation centered on ecological conservation and intergenerational justice.

We call on the COP31 delegates and global civil society to consider six fundamental shifts:

1. Beyond Market Dogma: Slowing Down the Pace of Civilization

The climate crisis is fundamentally a question of time and our way of existence. Reducing climate action to carbon pricing and allowing corporations to trade emissions rights is merely extending market colonization over nature. We need non-market approaches that slow the relentless pace of modern life, foster "slow living," and empower individuals to actively participate in climate solutions outside the carbon market.

2. Rethinking AI and High-Energy Technologies: Tech Must Not Burden the Earth

Amid the uncritical rush toward Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitalization, we must confront a stark reality: massive data centers, computation power, and chip manufacturing are driving unprecedented energy consumption, water depletion, and e-waste. If AI development primarily serves infinite market expansion, fuels overconsumption, and drains renewable energy grids, it represents an ecological catastrophe rather than progress. Technology must be governed by strict ecological ethics, prioritizing climate monitoring, ecosystem restoration, and resource circulation over reckless commercial growth.

3. Reimagining Calendars and Ecological Diversity

Our current production-oriented calendar leaves little room for non-human life to thrive and regenerate. We must honor local traditional ecological calendars and integrate natural cycles into our societies, giving ecosystems the time and space required to heal.

4. Reduced Working Hours as a Climate Mitigation Tool (Degrowth & Climate Strikes)

Work hours and consumption patterns directly dictate greenhouse gas emissions. Promoting shorter workweeks (e.g., a 4-day workweek), global sabbatical periods, or climate strikes offers immediate reductions in overproduction, consumption, and energy use—delivering rapid climate results where slow-moving commercial technology cannot.

5. Global Habitat Protection Networks

Primary forests and oceans are global commons, not resources for national or corporate exploitation. We advocate replacing traditional nation-state boundaries with "ecological communities," establishing international protection corridors along national borders to preserve Earth's biodiversity.

6. Rethinking the Monetary System and Debt-Driven Growth

The endless impulse to turn nature into commodities stems from a monetary system built on interest and perpetual expansion. We must design green economic frameworks that reflect true ecological value and end the viral expansion of financial capital over the biosphere.

7. A Climate Peace Pact: Diverting Military Budgets to Climate Action

True security is not measured by military power, but by living peacefully within Earth's ecological boundaries. Nations—especially major military powers and historical emitters—must adopt a Climate Peace Pact, reallocating military expenditures toward climate disaster relief, ecological restoration, and sustainable urban transformation.

Conclusion: The threat of climate change far outweighs geopolitical rivalries. We need the courage and imagination to build a green future that respects ecological limits and allows humanity and nature to thrive together.
